U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Shilo Harris was on patrol in Iraq in 2007 when an improvised explosive device (IED) struck the vehicle in which he was traveling. His face and more than 40% of his body were badly burned. Despite his devastating injuries, Harris refused to leave the scene until every member of his patrol team was accounted for.

Back home near San Antonio, Texas, Harris began a long and painful recovery process while dedicating his time to giving hope and inspiration to other wounded veterans. But exposure to coarse and fine dust, germs, viruses and other airborne pollutants was a constant threat to Harris’ health.

That’s when the designers at the ABC-TV hit show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” stepped in. For a hero in need of the cleanest air possible, the Extreme Makeover designers called in the IQAir Clean Air Team!

IQAir and “Extreme Makeover” worked together to create one of the healthiest homes in America for Sgt. Harris and his family. One side of the new Harris home was designed for Shilo to work and sleep, and the other side was designed for the entire family, including Shilo, to spend time together

One of two PerfectPro whole-house air purifiers installed in the Harris home.

An IQAir PerfectPro whole-house air filtration system was installed on each side of the house to remove more than 90 percent of the particles in the air five times every hour. Each PerfectPro was integrated into a state-of-the-art heating and cooling system designed to maintain a consistent temperature.

“The air you are breathing right now is the same quality as in hospitals,” Extreme Makeover host Ty Pennington tells the Harris Family while showing them their new Perfect 16 system in Part 2 of the episode.

“From the moment you walk in the front door you can tell that the air is like a thousand times better than it ever was,” Harris tells Pennington.

The Clean Air Team also installed a commercial-grade IQAir Air Quality Monitoring Station on Shilo’s side of the house to continuously monitor air quality conditions both inside and outdoors. Shiloh can now enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that the air he is breathing is free from nearly all of the airborne contaminants that could threaten him.

“Shilo Harris paid a high price to help protect and defend our nation,” said Glory Dolphin, CEO of IQAir North America and a member of the Clean Air Team. “The least we can do is to help his recovery by giving him clean air to breathe.”
